Effective Anxiety Cures

40 Million Americans are Diagnosed with Anxiety Disorders
New and effective anxiety cures are continually being developed with ongoing research as to the specifics of the many complex disorders that have already been identified. Medication, followed by therapy, as well as continued self care have proven to be the most effective anxiety cures recommended by mental health professionals for the 40 million Americans currently diagnosed with anxiety disorders.

While medication alone cannot actually cure anxiety, it is able to help people control their symptoms more effectively. Some of the drugs prescribed as hopeful anxiety cures include antidepressants and antianxiety drugs, as well as another type called benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines may be habit-forming for some people, causing either a mental and or physical dependency if taken for long periods of time or in high doses, and are usually prescribed after other drugs proved to be ineffective.

Antidepressants Can be Used to Treat Anxiety Disorders
Antidepressants, including paroxetine, sertraline, and fluoxetine are prescribed to reduce or eliminate the signs and symptoms of many types of anxiety and panic disorders in addition to treating depression. This type of drug works by altering the chemicals within the brain and usually requires at least four to six weeks of continued use to be effective.

Some of the types of antidepressants used for anxiety cures or treatments include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclics, and the oldest class of antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Antianxiety medications that are prescribed for the treatment of anxiety disorders include alprazolam, clonazepam, and lorazepam, and the newer buspirone, which is commonly used for treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Side Effects of Anxiety Medication
All of these medications may have different side effects that also vary in intensity from person to person. In most all cases, these types of medication should not be stopped abruptly and may cause a series of withdrawal symptoms. Antianxiety drugs usually cause minor side effects such as drowsiness, whereas some classes of antidepressants may cause nausea, headaches, and either weight gain or loss.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) involves sessions with either a psychologist or psychiatrist who are trained to identify the root of the anxiety, and offer guidance to reduce or eliminate the negative effects of various disorders.

The cognitive portion of the therapy teaches one to recognize what may trigger or cause the anxiety or panic to occur. Once that is established, the behavior part deals with learning ways of coping with anxiety when it does happen through the use of breathing and relaxation techniques.

The average length of CBT is generally around 12 weeks, and may involve the use of one-on-one counseling sessions, as well as group sessions, which are particularly effective for the treatment of social phobias. Some of these sessions may also be conducted by a qualified social worker or counselor.

Self Care
Using self care methods as natural anxiety cures are an effective way of controlling symptoms at home, and without the need for medication. Relaxation and various stress reduction techniques are gaining attention as ways of relieving not only the minor stressors of every day life, but also the extreme instances of anxiety due to panic disorders. Regular deep breathing exercises and self-hypnosis are two more anxiety cures that are often used in self care programs.
